American Water President and CEO John Griffith and City of Camden Mayor Victor G. Carstarphen, along with the Camden Fire Department, Camden Police Department, local officials and more, join together to install the first flags for the annual 9/11 memorial with 2,977 American flags, honoring the lives lost that day as well as the survivors, their families and first responders.

"At American Water, we remain dedicated to serving our customers and communities. Each year, we join the Camden community to honor those who lost their lives 24 years ago and to recognize the contributions of first responders and their families," said John Griffith, President and CEO of American Water. "This marks the fifth consecutive year that American Water has placed 2,977 flags at RCA Pier Park. We are particularly honored this year to collaborate with Mayor Carstarphen and the City of Camden—a city we are proud to call home."

Events included a brief ceremonial program featuring a wreath dedication, a moment of silence, a siren salute, and additional commemorative activities. The program concluded with American Water and City of Camden employee volunteers, along with first responders, installing 2,977 American flags—representing each life lost—at RCA Pier Park, located adjacent to the American Water headquarters in Camden, N.J.

“We come together for a day of remembrance of the 2,977 victims lost in New York, Shanksville, PA, and at the Pentagon,” said Camden Mayor Victor G. Carstarphen. “I ask that we remember those brave first responders who ran into danger knowing the consequences, and we remember all those who volunteered in the recovery efforts as well. I often think about the survivors—friends, parents, siblings, spouses, children, and those who lost a loved one but managed to bravely carry on. I feel one of the most important legacies of 9/11 is despite the tragedy, our country managed to pull ourselves back up, stand united, and work though incredibly difficult times. That is an inspirational message of hope and resilience for all of us.”

The flag memorial serves as a moment of reflection and remembrance in honor of the lives lost, survivors, their families and first responders. The flags will remain on display for approximately one week. After which they will be donated to Camden County Veteran Affairs, where the flags will be used again for Veterans Day in November.
