The new district attorney in Dallas has announced his office will no longer prosecute those who steal "theft of necessary items" up to $750.

Fox 4 reports Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot’s announcement drew immediate criticism from small business owners who are worried that the policy will encourage shoplifting.

The DA tried to defend his decision, saying prosecutors are “criminalizing poverty” by going after people who steal what he considers “personal items.

Creuzot later said that “Maybe I didn't put enough words in when I said personal items,” adding that he’s talking about food and formula that people need to live.

The DA did agree to track crime numbers to see if the new policy is causing an increase in crime.
