This quick guide will help you understand these situations and make sure you choose the right Medicare plan for your needs. By learning about your options, you can avoid potential problems and have a smooth transition into Medicare.

"I am turning 65 in July and am bombarded with mail and telemarketing calls. I am not receiving Social Security and a friend who just got Medicare is receiving her Social Security check. Do I have to be receiving my Social Security check to get Medicare?

Please explain what I should do because I was waiting to apply for Social Security when I can receive 100% of my Social Security benefits. Currently, I have an individual health plan with a $6000 deductible and having Medicare benefits would be a blessing. Thanks!" - Joan

Here are the Medicare questions being asked:

  • Do I need to be receiving my Social Security check to enroll in Medicare?

  • What steps should I take to enroll in Medicare while delaying Social Security to receive full benefits later?

  • How can I transition from my current individual health plan to having Medicare?

Toni Says:

Enrolling in Medicare can be confusing! Many people believe that turning 65 automatically enrolls them, but that's not the case. It's actually the Social Security Administration that handles the enrollment process. For more detailed information, Chapter 1 of Toni’s Medicare Survival Guide Advanced Edition is a great resource.

Taking Medicare at the Right Time

Situation 1: Turning 65 and Receiving Your Social Security Check
This is the easiest scenario. Social Security will notify Medicare that you've turned 65, and you'll receive a "Welcome to Medicare" kit 90 days before your birthday, complete with your Medicare card. This was the case for your friend Joan, who was already receiving her Social Security check.

Situation 2: Turning 65 and Still Working
Consult your employer’s Human Resources department to determine if you need to enroll in Part B. If you're still employed or your spouse is, and you have health benefits, you might delay enrolling in Part B and opt for Medicare Part A (Hospital) only.

Situation 3: Turning 65, Not Receiving Social Security, and No Employer Health Benefits
If you're approaching 65 under these circumstances, you'll need to initiate your own enrollment online at SSA.gov. It's wise to set up an SSA.gov account well before turning 65. This is your situation, Joan, since you want to enroll in Medicare but are delaying Social Security to receive full benefits. If you encounter issues with the SSA.gov account, contact your local Social Security office or call (800) 772-1213 for help.

How to Apply Online for Medicare

Visit ssa.gov/medicare/sign-up and prepare the following information:

  • Name, Social Security number, gender, and date of birth
  • Contact information, including address, phone number, and email
  • Citizenship details and preferred language
  • Information about your current health benefits

After submitting your application, you'll receive a receipt indicating any additional required information, such as your marriage license or citizenship documents if necessary.

Your Beneficiary Verification Letter (BVL), containing your Medicare number and Part A and/or B effective dates, will be available in your Social Security account once processed. Your new Medicare card will be mailed to you, or you can download it from Medicare.gov.

Important Medicare Rules

Remember, Medicare has specific rules everyone must follow. It's crucial to be informed, as ignorance can lead to costly mistakes. Stay proactive and ensure a smooth transition to Medicare.
