Remember Compassion And Balance

Jill Biden’s contention, that she worried her husband was having a stroke during the 2024 debate is one of the most obvious lies n political history.  Lies so audacious are not born of simple attempts to “change the narrative,” cover up wrongdoing or some other self-serving reason.  Such obvious falsehoods, spoken with such apparent sincerity, are a sign of self-delusion. Jill Biden was not lying to us, she was lying to herself.  That makes it difficult to know how to react.

God hates lies.  Lying for any reason is completely outside God’s character.  As such you would expect lying to be condemnable.  But I am not entirely sure Jill Biden is lying in the traditional sense of the word.  I do believe she is delusional, and it is a state born of a narcissism so deep that it forces her to believe her own lies.  In other words, she is not lying with intention – she is mentally ill – she is unable to discern truth and lie.

As Christians, we are urged to be compassionate with people that are hurting – to bear their burdens.  But I think in modern times we have distorted even that charge.  Bearing the burden of such people does not necessarily mean letting them run around free and unfettered to damage those around them.  At that point their delusions become evil.  In this case we let those delusions into the White House and we are still totaling up the damage.

This morning as I head to church I struggle with the line between bearing my fellow Christian’s burdens and condemning their sin (my own as well.)  I think compassion demands that we confront the delusions of those suffering them.  But when their delusions are so deep that the truth cannot penetrate how are we to react?

I think we are to trust God to penetrate that which we cannot.  But I also think we are to move to minimize the damage their delusions can create in others and the world.  Example, Jill Biden can be forgiven for loving her husband and not wanting his presidency to end in shame – that’s personal.  But the rest of the government should have put the country first – ahead of their personal loyalties.

As Christians we are called to love everyone.  But we cannot let the love of someone special allow that someone special to do harm. Then our love is too narrowly focused.
