Reader Question from Beverly Gilmore:

“Thank you so much for this opportunity 🩷 I am traveling to Greece in August to do a 7-day island cruise with my daughter. Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, Thessaloniki. Without doing a tour offered by the ship, what is an absolute not miss?”

Beverly, first—how magical to be exploring the Greek Isles with your daughter! That’s already a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. Cruising through Santorini, Ephesus, Mykonos, and Thessaloniki in August? Pure Mediterranean dream.

Let’s skip the cruise line cattle-herd tours and dive straight into the must-experience non-tour gems at each port:

🟣 Santorini

Ditch the tour buses and ride the cable car up from the port in Fira. Then take a local bus or taxi to Oia (pronounced EE-ah) for that postcard view—blue domes, whitewashed walls, and the Aegean sparkling below. For something extra special, book a table at a cliffside taverna like Ambrosia before sunset. That golden hour over the caldera? Indescribable.

🟡 Ephesus (Kuşadası, Turkey)

You can explore the ruins of Ephesus on your own—and we recommend you do! Take a short taxi ride from the port to the ancient city gates, and walk the Marble Road past the Library of Celsus, the Great Theatre, and the Terrace Houses. Bonus: Go early to beat the heat and the tour groups. For lunch? Hit Agora Restaurant in Kuşadası for local Turkish flavors.

🔵 Mykonos

Start your day early and stroll through Little Venice before it’s overrun. Sip Greek coffee as the sea splashes against the buildings. Walk to the iconic windmills, then make your way to Paraga Beach—less crowded than Paradise or Super Paradise, and stunning. For lunch, Nikos Taverna near the harbor offers authentic charm and ridiculously fresh seafood.

🟢 Thessaloniki

Skip the museums—walk the Ladadika District, a restored old quarter filled with color, music, and incredible local eats. Grab a sweet bougatsa pastry and wander the seaside promenade to the White Tower, then take in the sweeping views from the Ano Poli (Upper Town). It’s local, vibrant, and unmistakably Greek.

Enjoy every sun-drenched moment, Beverly. You’re not just making a trip—you’re making memories.

Hope that helps!,
