President Donald Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law, marking the first piece of legislation to become law in his second administration.

"This horrific atrocity should never have been allowed to happen," Trump said. "And as president, I'm fighting every single day to ensure that such a tragedy never happens again."

The bill directs ICE to detain illegal migrants who have been arrested or charged with theft-related crimes or assaulting a police officer – something that would have prevented Laken’s murder.

Riley's mother, Allyson Phillips, gave a tearful statement thanking Trump for everything he has done to keep her daughter's memory alive.

"We also want to thank President Trump for the promises he made to us. He said he would secure our borders and that he never would forget about Laken — and he hasn't. He is a man of his word," Phillips said.

The law's name honors the 22-year-old nursing student who was murdered by an illegal migrant during a jog on the University of Georgia’s campus.
