Mets host Cards...Pirates at Cubs...Mavs advance

NEW YORK (AP) — Holding the best record in the National League, the New York Mets host the Cardinals in their first meeting since a bench-clearing scuffle between the teams last month in St. Louis. Miles Mikolas is scheduled to pitch for the Cardinals in the opener of a four-game series — though bad weather is in the forecast. New York is expected to tab long man Trevor Williams for a spot start in place of injured Tylor Megill.

CHICAGO (AP) — The Pirates head to Wrigley Field seeking a slightly more convincing victory a day after beating the Reds 1-0 despite having zero hits. It marked the sixth time since 1901 that a big league team won despite not getting any hits. By MLB record-keeping rules, Cincinnati’s accomplishment wasn’t an official no-hitter because its pitchers didn’t go at least nine innings.

TORONTO (AP) — The Seattle Mariners open a series in Toronto, and will be missing some players. Manager Scott Servais said “a couple players” wouldn’t make the trip for a three-game series at Toronto because of the Canadian government’s vaccine mandate.

OAKLAND, Calif. (AP) — Twins star outfielder Byron Buxton is second in the majors with 11 home runs going into the start of this week’s series at Oakland. Buxton connected Sunday in a 3-1 win over Cleveland. He has a .330 on-base average and .706 slugging percentage despite missing 12 games because of knee trouble.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) — After beating the Phoenix Suns, the NBA's top team during the regular season, the Dallas Mavericks are headed to the Western Conference finals for the first time since 2011. They'll face the Golden State Warriors in a series that begins Wednesday at Golden State. In the Eastern Conference finals, the Boston Celtics will face top-seeded Miami beginning tomorrow night in a rematch of the 2020 East finals.
