Sen. Bernie Sanders believes Democratic gubernatorial candidates Andrew Gillum and Stacey Abrams had a harder time at the polls this week than expected because they’re black.

The Washington Examiner reports Sanders told The Daily Beast in an interview published Thursday, that “there are a lot of white folks out there, who are not necessarily racist, who felt uncomfortable…to vote for an African-American.”

Gillum, who had originally conceded to Republican rival Ron DeSantis is now calling for a recount.

Abrams has refused to concede to GOP nominee Brian Kemp, who has claimed victory.

Sanders also criticized Democrats who campaigned in the middle rather than siding with his more progressive platform.

He said the next time around “it will be a lot easier” for black candidates to win.
